How AI complicates enterprise risk management

Despite the gains artificial intelligence has already brought to the enterprise, there is still much hand-wringing over its potential for unintended consequences. While the headlines tend to focus on AI running amok and destroying all mankind, the practical reality is that current generations of AI are more likely to wreak havoc on business processes — and profits — if not managed properly.

But how can you control something that, by its nature, is supposed to act autonomously? And by doing so, won’t the enterprise be hampering the very thing that makes AI such a valuable asset in the workplace?

AI gone wrong

OnCorps CEO Bob Suh offers a good overview of the harm AI can cause, even when employed with the best of intentions. The experiences of the social media platforms illustrate how poorly designed algorithms can produce one set of positive results (more sharing) while at the same time promulgating negative results (misinformation and manipulation). It’s fair to say that executives at Facebook and Twitter did not intend for their platforms to foster society-wide conflict and animosity, but they did focus their efforts on maximizing profits, so that is what their reinforcement learning agents (RLAs) did.

RLAs are based on simple reward functions in which positive results prompt the agent to expand and refine its actions. Without a countervailing reward mechanism, the agent will continue to get better at what it does even if it no longer produces a desirable outcome. In this way, the social media bots were highly successful at achieving their programmed objectives even as they were being manipulated by some in the user community to weaponize public opinion and sow discord throughout the population.

These same problems can emerge in sales, marketing and other functions. And unfortunately, few organizations are equipped to identify and correct algorithms that are driving undesirable outcomes until the damage is done. This can take the form of everything from lost revenue and missed market opportunities to security breaches and damage to internal structures and processes.

At its heart, implementing the proper controls on AI is a form of risk management. Due to its autonomous nature, however, AI requires a little more attention than standard IT, say McKinsey partners Juan Aristi Baquero, Roger Burkhardt, Arvind Govindarajan, and Thomas Wallace. For one thing, AI introduces a number of unfamiliar risks across a multiple disciplines, including compliance, operations, legal, and regulatory. Banks, for example, have long worried about bias from their human employees, but if those employees start making recommendations based on what a biased AI tells them, now the institution has systematized that bias into its decision-making process.

Another problem is the way AI is rapidly becoming decentralized across the enterprise, which makes it difficult to track and monitor. And as the various AI implementations of multiple vendors, partners, and other entities start to communicate with one another, the potential to introduce new risks increases. A new tool within a vendor’s CRM platform, for example, could create data privacy and compliance risks across multiple geographical regions.

Up-front management

The best way to manage these risks is to implement the proper controls before AI becomes woven into the fabric of the enterprise, according to Todd Bialick, digital assurance and transparency leader at PwC. To do that, you’ll need to conduct a full-stack review of everything AI touches as it seeks to fulfill its mandate. This includes data-layer policies governing input and set selection, oversight and transparency in algorithm and model development, continual review of output and decisions, and full control over logical security, compute operations, and program change and development.

Training AI to behave ethically is also an emerging, yet extremely nascent, field that has drawn the interest of both private- and public-sector organizations. One of the key difficulties is that ethics is a very subjective discipline, in which ethical actions in one set of circumstances can be unethical in another. But as James Kobielus, senior director of research for data management at TDWI, points out, ultimate ethical responsibility must remain with humans, not with inanimate objects, no matter how intelligent they seem. To prevent AI from “going rogue,” it should always incorporate human interests as a core element, and this can manifest itself in everything from the decisions it makes to the way it looks. As well, transparency in AI inferencing lineage may be necessary to ensure there is an audit trail back to the humans who created it.

In the end, of course, managing AI is a matter of trust. Organizations would be wise to treat AI just like any other employee: Give it a limited set of responsibilities, see how it performs, and then promote it to higher levels of authority after it has proven itself both capable and worthy. Just like you don’t appoint a recent graduate as your new CIO, you don’t place AI in charge of C-level sales management or HR.

While the risk of unintended consequences can never be reduced to zero, the odds are good that in some way, somehow, humans and AI will find a way to work together. And since both forms of intelligence provide strengths that compensate for the other’s weaknesses, it is more than likely their relationship with be mutually beneficial relationship, not hostile.

Report: Store closures decline for the first time in 2021

Dive Brief:

For the first time in 2021, store closures have declined year over year, according to an emailed report from Coresight Research. The firm tracked 4,626 closures so far this year, 5.7% fewer than last year at this time. Leading retailers in closures so far is Christopher & Banks, which liquidated its physical footprint in bankruptcy this year. Another recent retail bankruptcy, Francesca's, closed 342 stores, a significant chunk of its footprint.Openings to date stand at 4,311, a 41.8% increase over the same period in 2020. The runaway leader in openings is Dollar General, with 1,035 new stores this year, followed by Dollar Tree with 393 openings.

Dive Insight:

After a harrowing pandemic and global recession, retail had few places to go in 2021 but up. From earnings of individual companies to U.S. Census sales reports, there is reason for hope across the industry.

Coresight's latest report is another data point showing how retail is recovering from the wretched year of 2020. Earlier this year, for a moment, openings even outpaced closures, according to Coresight. As the year has worn on, closures have overtaken openings again, however.

Still, the surge in openings this year compared to last is a sign that retailers are confident in the future of their business, including in brick and mortar, despite the lingering impact of the pandemic and shifts among consumers toward more digital shopping.

While Dollar General and other dollar stores, including Dollar Tree and Five Below, account for more than a fourth of all openings, a whole range of retailers are opening new shops. Burlington, Tractor Supply, Ross Stores, the revived Payless, Old Navy, Target, Ulta, Nike, the revived Charming Charlie and many others have all opened stores this year, according to Coresight.

As for the slowed pace of closures this year, one reason is likely the similarly slowed pace of retail bankruptcies, which often dominate the ranks of closures. Major retail bankruptcies tracked by Retail Dive had already hit 15 by this time last year, and many of them closed stores or liquidated entirely. That figure is almost twice the number of retailers that have filed for bankruptcy so far this year.

Retailers both healthy and distressed have been lifted by the vaccine rollout, government stimulus, booming financial markets — which have been crucial for keeping weaker retailers afloat — and a general return of customers to stores.

Windows 11 cheat sheet: Everything you need to know

(Source: techrepublic.com)

by Kristen Lotze in Software on June 30, 2021

This comprehensive guide offers details about Microsoft Windows 11, including new features, system requirements, when you can download the OS and more.

Microsoft unveiled on June 24, 2021 its newest operating system, Windows 11—almost six years after Windows 10 debuted. Windows 11 will offer several updates and new features, including a simpler design intended to increase productivity, ease of use and creativity, ways to connect to people faster, better PC gaming experiences, faster ways to get information you need, an all-new Microsoft Store, and a more open ecosystem that unlocks new opportunities for developers and other creators.

This Microsoft Windows 11 cheat sheet details the operating system's main features, lists system requirements for the OS, explains how and when to get it and more. We'll update this Windows 11 guide when new information is released.

What is Windows 11?

Windows 11 is Microsoft's newest major release of its operating system and the successor to Windows 10. The OS features an all-new simplified, yet modernized, interface and was designed to inspire productivity and creativity.

What new features come with Windows 11?

In Windows 11, the newly centered Start button uses the cloud and Microsoft 365 to show recent files, no matter what platform or device they were being viewed on previously, including an Android or iOS device.

A new set of features to Microsoft Windows 11 will be the introduction of Snap Layouts, Snap Groups and Desktops. These offer a "powerful way to multitask and stay on top of what you need to get done," according to the Microsoft's press release. With these Windows 11 features, users can organize windows and optimize screen real estate for a cleaner visual layout. Users can create and customize separate Desktops for each part of their life—like one for work and one for personal use.

In Windows 11, Microsoft is integrating Chat from Microsoft Teams into the taskbar so users can instantly connect via text, chat, voice or video with personal contacts regardless of which platform or device is being used across Microsoft Windows, Android or iOS. Through Microsoft Teams, users can now instantly mute and unmute or start a presentation directly from the taskbar in the new OS.

For gamers, Windows 11 "unlocks the full potential of your system's hardware, putting some of the latest gaming technology to work for you," according to Microsoft. Windows 11 will offer DirectX 12 Ultimate, which enables immersive graphics at high frame rates; DirectStorage for faster load times and more detailed game worlds; and Auto HDR for a wider, more vivid range of colors. Microsoft Windows 11 will still support users' favorite PC gaming accessories and peripherals.

Windows 11's new Widgets are a personalized feed powered by artificial intelligence and Microsoft Edge. Instead of using a phone to check news, weather or notifications, now users can open their Windows 11 desktop to see a similarly curated view. Widgets offers new opportunities within Windows 11 to deliver personalized content for creators and publishers.

The Microsoft Store is getting a major overhaul–users will have one safe location for apps and content to watch, create, play, work and learn. According to Microsoft, the Store "has been rebuilt for speed and with an all-new design that is beautiful and simple to use. Not only will we bring you more apps than ever before, we're also making all content—apps, games, shows, movies—easier to search for and discover with curated stories and collections." Soon, leading first- and third-party apps such as Microsoft Teams, Visual Studio, Disney+, Adobe Creative Cloud, Zoom and Canva will be available in the Microsoft Store.

Coming in late 2021 for Windows 11: Android apps on Windows. Through its partnership with Amazon and Intel, and for the first time ever, the Microsoft Store will allow users to discover Android apps, which can be downloaded via the Amazon Appstore. Microsoft is enabling developers and independent software vendors to bring apps to the Microsoft Store, no matter what app framework is used to create them.

What do developers need to know about Windows 11?

Windows 11 features the new PWABuilder3, so developers can build a PWA from their web app in minutes. WebView2 runtime is included with Windows 11, which makes it easier to take advantage of its web platform as a secure way to build hybrid web apps. Offerings like Windows Terminal and the new Microsoft Edge DevTools can still be used, as they are now included in Windows 11.

The Windows App SDK (previously known as Project Reunion) will make it easier to integrate Windows 11 features into apps, but it still allows developers to reach more than a billion users on Windows 10. The Windows App SDK 1.0 is set to be released later this year.

Developers can build apps that run natively on Windows on ARM with the new ARM64 Emulation Compatible ABI. Using the ARM64EC, native ARM and emulated x64 code can be mixed in the same process or module. This interoperability means developers can optimize apps to run on Windows on ARM—even if the app has x64 dependencies or loads x64 plugins they don't control.

To rejuvenate app designs, developers can use WinUI3 in Windows 11, which offers built-in UI updates such as rounded geometry, refreshed iconography, new typography, fun micro-interactions (such as Lottie animation) and refreshed color palette. The Snap layouts feature will helps with maximum productivity in Windows 11.

Reunion Windowing allows developers to easily manage and create app windows. The feature works with existing app codes, simplifies common operations and brings new functionality to desktop apps like Light-Dismiss Behavior, Picture-In-Picture mode and easier titlebar customization.

Along with the major changes to the Microsoft Store, Microsoft is taking steps to unlock greater economic opportunity for creators and developers. Microsoft plans to enable developers and independent software vendors to bring their apps regardless of whether they're built as a Win32, Progressive Web App, Universal Windows App or any other app framework. This will allow developers to reach and engage a larger audience.

The revenue share policies will be changing, too, according to Microsoft. App developers can now bring their own commerce into the Microsoft Store and keep 100% of the revenue—Microsoft takes nothing. Developers can still use Microsoft's commerce with competitive revenue share of 85/15.

What are the system requirements for Windows 11?

  • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with two or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC)

What Social Ad is Best for Your Company?

(Source: business2community.com) [set to Helvetica Neue and delete this line after done so]

Corie StarkJune 23, 2021

Chances are you’re investing in some paid social media advertising. When used effectively, these ads can be a powerful lead generation tool and a method to reinforce other targeted marketing efforts.

Still, if you aren’t using them yet, we get it.

With so many different platforms offering various formats, it can be challenging to decide which is best for your company. But don’t give up yet! In this blog, we’ll cover different types of ads and whether they’re more suitable for a B2B or B2C environment so you can make an informed decision.

Facebook

In 2021, Facebook still reigns supreme. Over 1.73 billion users access the platform daily, spending anywhere from a few minutes to hours posting and reading their news feeds – and of course, looking at ads. Facebook also allows the most advanced targeting of any social platform. You can target users by location within a five-mile radius, job description, interests, past activity, and other hyper-focused criteria.

So, both B2B and B2C companies shouldn’t ignore Facebook advertising. Here are two widely popular formats that garner results:

Video: Across all platforms, videos perform the best. It’s even higher for video advertisements – or a sponsored, branded video seen in a user’s news feed or timeline. In fact, 70% of all consumers think these ads are relevant to them. They particularly think Facebook video ads are relatable, too. The clickthrough rate of these ads averages between 1.05 – 3.42%, higher than any other network. The average cost per spend on these ads is low also, making them a solid choice if you have time and skill sets to make quality videos.

Carousel or Image Ads: If you can’t produce a video ad, a carousel or image ad is a great alternative. They’re popular and cheap, and easy to make without having a design team on staff. They’re simply a branded, sponsored image or collection of images with corresponding copy and CTA. According to Databox, image ads are likely to influence 25% of people who see them to visit that company’s website or landing page. If you can whip up a simple, unique image with an enticing copy and a CTA to go along with it, you’ll be successful!

Instagram

Over the years, Instagram has developed into a powerful marketing tool for businesses – especially for B2C companies in the eCommerce, restaurant, beauty, clothing, and home décor industries. The platform has one billion active and engaged users, with 72% reporting purchasing after seeing something on Instagram.

It is worth noting that this user base skews heavily to women between 18-29, so keep that in mind when designing and writing ads. But, if you sell consumer products, your ears are likely perked up by now right? So here are two ad formats to help drive conversions and awareness:

Story Ads: After the success of Instagram Stories, the platform introduced story ads to offer businesses a more authentic, less filtered way to highlight their brand and products. And it worked. A study done by Facebook revealed 62% of users said they become more interested in a brand or product after seeing it in a story. Why? Stories are less intrusive, better designed, shorter, and more genuine to consumers. So they’re something to consider!

Shoppable Posts: Instagram introduced shoppable posts or ads in late 2020, making them one of the newest forms of social media advertising. The platform released them as a way to help brands that shuttered their doors due to COVID-19. These ads have shortened the path to purchase and driven conversion rates up by 50%. They’ve also increased clickthrough rates to websites by 50%. They’re similar to a sponsored image but utilize product tags and an “Add to Cart” or “Buy Now” CTA under the ad’s copy. If you have the design skills on hand, this is worth checking out.

Twitter

While Twitter’s 353.1 million monthly active users seem significantly smaller than its counterparts, it’s an excellent advertising source for both B2C and B2B companies. These users are highly engaged, particularly when it comes to small businesses. Twitter itself reports that 60% of users have purchased something from Twitter from a small business. When you consider the fact you only pay for your ad if you reach your goal, it’s worth giving these two types of ads a try:

Promoted Tweets: Promoted tweets seamlessly incorporate themselves into a user’s newsfeed, making them non-intrusive. Because of this, they garner a lot of impressions. If you design and write them well, you’ll benefit from a high clickthrough rate to your website or landing page. As noted, you’ll also only pay when you meet your marketing objective, making them cost-effective.

Video Ads: Like Facebook, Twitter also offers video advertising, a highly effective way to drive conversions on the platform. A promoted video or GIF also helps propel brand awareness as they are six times more likely to be retweeted than any other form of content. Remember, Twitter’s nature is fast-paced and up to date, so video ads work well for timely video promotion centered around an event, movie, or TV show. If you can time a video or gif around this, or simply want to dip your toes into video advertising, don’t skip these ads.

LinkedIn

Most of the platforms on this list work well for B2B and B2C companies, with a slight edge for B2C. That’s not the case with LinkedIn, the king of B2B social advertising. Nearly 61 million LinkedIn users are senior-level influencers, and 40 million are in decision-making positions. You can target based on job role, job function, company size, and more, so you can easily reach these stakeholders. Try these ads to boost your conversions:

Sponsored Post: A LinkedIn sponsored post appears in a user’s news feed like any other post. They’re a non-evaise and reliable way to generate quality leads because you don’t need a ton of engagement on your company’s LinkedIn profile to get your ad in front of the right person’s eyes. You can also easily edit the content as your objectives or content changes over time, making them a good avenue to try out for any B2B company.

InMail: LinkedIn InMail is a premium messaging feature that lets you directly message people you’re not connected to on LinkedIn. They’re technically a form of advertisement and a great tool for sales executives to reach their most promising leads. Businesses have reported open rates of up to 85% and clickthrough rates over 5%. If you work on an account-based marketing model, you’ll want to try sending InMail.

Pinterest and Snapchat

Pinterest and Snapchat each have niche audiences that favor B2C companies. For example, 81% of Pinterest users are females, generally looking for shopping, health, or food inspiration. Promoted pins, or a sponsored version of any pin you create, can help 61% of all Pinterest users discover new products or brands.

For Snapchat, their user base tilts to the younger generations, with the bulk of their users falling into the 18-39 age group. Additionally, 61% of their user base is female. Snapchat ads to explore that may benefit your B2C company include Snap Ads, a mobile, interactive ad with a five times higher swipe-up rate than comparable social platforms, and Snapchat Discover. Snapchat Discover puts a brand’s story at the tip of the user’s discovery feed – but it is costly, at $50,000 per day.

Wrapping Up

Any of these ads can be effective if you take the time to develop the design, copy, targeting, placement, and CTA. However, depending on your budget, business type, and experience, some will outperform others. For instance, a B2B company will want to try LinkedIn sponsored posts. On the other hand, an eCommerce company with stunning visuals will benefit more from Instagram stories.

How to Index Cryptocurrency

(Source: etftrends.com)

PARKER DOYLE JUNE 23, 2021

Crypto assets are creating new, unpredictable, and increasingly valuable decentralized markets.

Yet one of the biggest issues facing the burgeoning crypto industry is a lack of transparency.

According to experts at S&P, building indices on crypto assets could help to address these concerns, while potentially increasing the number of funds investing in the crypto industry.

Multiple index publishers have launched crypto asset indices in recent months.

Henry Fernandez, the CEO of major index publisher MSCI, announced that his company has been looking into launching crypto indices, according to Reuters. Fernandez did not mention any details or provide a timeline, however.

This announcement comes just a few months after the S&P Dow Jones Indices launched several of its own crypto indices, including the S&P Bitcoin Index (SPBTC), S&P Ethereum Index (SPETH), and S&P Crypto Mega Cap Index (SPCMC).

The S&P Indices will measure the performance of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and a market cap weighting of Bitcoin and Ethereum. The indices rebalance quarterly and are maintained by the S&P Dow Jones Indices’ Index Committee. According to the methodology document, S&P partner firm Lukka will provide data for the indices.

S&P plans to include additional coins and large cap and broad market benchmark indices later this year.

S&P announced its indices around the same time that Bloomberg launched the Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index (BGCI) in partnership with digital assets merchant bank Galaxy Digital Capital Management.

The Bloomberg Crypto Index tracks the performance of ten USD-traded crypto assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Monero, Ripple, and Zcash. No single constituent crypto asset can exceed 40% of the index’s market capitalization, however.

The index is rebalanced and reconstituted monthly and calculated and distributed under the oversight of Bloomberg’s Benchmark Oversight Committee.

The index is calculated using Bloomberg Crypto Price Fixings (CFIX), which is based on figures provided by the Bloomberg Generic Price (BGN), Bloomberg’s pricing algorithm.

A sub-index, the Bloomberg Galaxy bitcoin Index, is the benchmark proposed for the Galaxy Bitcoin ETF, one of the eight proposed physical Bitcoin ETFs before the SEC.

Do solar panels save money?

The short answer is yes, solar panels save money. In addition to helping the environment by reducing greenhouse emissions, solar panels allow you to keep more money in your bank account each month. You save by using less electricity, a saving that kicks into high gear once you've cut enough in electricity bills to recoup the installation cost. You're also likely to make more money when you sell your home.

How much do solar panels cost?

According to HomeGuide, the average cost of installing solar panels (after the 30% federal solar tax credit) ranges from $10,626 to $26,460. Your final price will depend on how many panels are required to meet your energy needs.

The number of needed kilowatts determines the total number of panels and final cost. The greater the number of panels, the higher the number of kilowatts. And it's the kilowatts that establish the percentage of electricity replaced. A 12-kilowatt system will cost more initially than a 6-kilowatt system, but it will save you more money over time.

How long does it take to recoup your investment?

How long it takes to earn back your initial investment depends on how much you spend on your solar panel project. If you snag a system for under $11,000, it will take about seven years to recoup the cost. If your initial investment is closer to $26,000, it will take 12 years to break even. Once your solar panels have saved enough in energy costs to pay for themselves, all other savings are a bonus.

Increase in home value

In addition to saving energy, installing solar panels can increase the value of your home. According to Zillow, homes with solar panels are worth up to 4.1% more than comparable homes without solar panels. Let's say homes similar to yours sell for $400,000. With solar panels, your home is more likely to be worth around $416,000.

Financing solar panels

If you don't plan on paying cash, it's still possible to purchase solar panels. Here are three options:

  • Personal loan

Most personal loans are unsecured, meaning you are not required to secure the loan with collateral. The interest rate is likely to be a bit higher than a secured loan would be, but there's no risk of losing your collateral if you miss payments.

If you have a high credit score, you're likely to be offered the lowest interest rate available. If you have a poor credit score, take a look at a personal loan for bad credit. You don't have to worry about shopping around for the best deal because most lenders only pull a soft credit check before letting you know whether you qualify. If your credit score is very low and the interest rates you're offered are high, consider taking time to improve your credit score before proceeding with the project.

  • Government loans

The PowerSaver loan, offered through the Federal Housing Administration allows homeowners to finance energy saving upgrades. There are two options: PowerSaver Second Mortgage or the PowerSaver Energy Rehab 203(k) loan. These loan programs typically require a minimum credit score of 660 and a debt-to-income ratio of 45%.

  • Home equity loan

A home equity loan makes it possible to borrow money from the equity in your home. Typically, a bank will finance up to 85% of the equity in your house. For example, if your home is worth $300,000, but you only owe $200,000, you have $100,000 in equity. Of that $100,000, the bank is likely to lend you up to $85,000. One nice thing about home equity loans is that they generally come with a low interest rate. That's because your home is used as collateral and the bank knows it won't lose its money. That said, think carefully before committing your home as collateral.

It's not often in life that you can do something nice for the planet while also benefiting your bank account, but solar panels provide a simple way to meet both goals.
